Nakumatt 1-2 Ulinzi Stars: Soldiers shop big away from Nakuru
The soldiers have moved top of Kenyan Premier League table after they battled to gun down Nakumatt in a league match
Omar Mbongi's late header sent Ulinzi Stars top of Kenyan Premier League table as the soldiers downed hosts Nakumatt 2-1 at Ruaraka on Saturday.
The soldiers came into the match as favourites as compared to the hosts, who were keen to continue with their fine run after their shock 2-1 win against Sofapaka in the same venue. It was a struggle for both teams in the first half, as the sides tried to settle.
In the 8th minute, league top scorer Stephen Waruru attempted to catch the opponent's custodian off guard but his effort flew just wide. In the 20th minute, the striker was at it again, this time round heading a cross aiming at the far corner but Sammy Okinda was there to clear the danger.
Nakumatt looked shaky especially at the back, with their opponents trying to push harder for an opener, only to be let down by poor finishing. After the first 45 minutes, it was obvious the Nakuru-based side was the best side, despite not hitting the back of the net.
Coach Benjamin Nyangweso's pep talk at the half-time break proved vital for the soldiers', who are chasing for the title. Okinda failed to handle a seemingly harmless ball in by Daniel Waweru, spilling it for Samuel Onyango to tap in.
However, the lead lasted for only ten minutes; former Sony Sugar man Joshua Oyoo, who had just come on, lashed onto a well weighted pass to level the scores in delight of the home fans. In the 61st minute, Hassan Mohammed's attempted clearance fell kindly to Kepha Aswani, who unleashed a fierce shot, but Jacktone Odhiambo was there to make the save.
With three minutes to go, Ulinzi Stars were handed a free-kick outside the 18-yard box which was cleverly taken by Waruru, but Okinda made a briliant save to send the ball out for a corner. Boniface Onyango took it, and the returning Omar Mbongi rose highest to hit the back of the net for the winner.
