Guns trained at Mathare United as team resumes training

Head coach Dunstan Nyaudo hopes for a better outcome when Ulinzi Stars hosts Mathare United at Afraha Stadium on Saturday 17th February

Head coach Dunstan Nyaudo will be keen on leading the team back to winning ways after the disappointing 0 – 1 loss to Sony Sugar in the second match of the season, on Sunday 11th February at the Awendo Green Stadium.

Next up for Ulinzi Stars will be a clash against Mathare United, a team that has started the season well, with two straight wins in as many matches and though the coach expects a big fight in the clash at Afraha Stadium on Saturday 17th February, he trusts his charges have what it takes to battle the 2008 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions.

Ulinzi Stars beat Mathare United home and away last season; 5 – 1 and 1 – 0 but the coach is not getting carried away by past achievements against the team, whose current assistant coach – Salim Ali – is a former Ulinzi Stars coach.

Tactical opponent

Mathare United tops the standings after identical 2 – 1 wins and Nyaudo acknowledges he will be facing a tactical opponent in the clash but remains confident his charges will give the visitors a good match.

“The current Mathare United side is a very tactical team. Last year they struggled but took their lessons so this time they recruited well to solve their shortcomings and they have a lot of necessary experience in the team as well.

“They are a good team but we are also strong and we will prepare and go out there to give a good account of ourselves,” he said.

Birgen return

A key absentee in the Ulinzi team so far this season has been defender Brian Birgen who suffered a knee sprain in preseason. It was expected Birgen would make the team in the trip to Sony Sugar but the coach opted for caution, letting him recover fully before resuming action.

The coach is not taking any chances with the defender’s recovery but stated that he will be observed with view of getting him ready for the Mathare game.

“According to the medical report, he still has some pain, because he had a knee injury and these are treated with really a lot of care, lest you damage it. He is however responding well and maybe he will be ready for Mathare United,” the coach added.
